Clinical Staff

Dr. Longman is the Director of the Jill Roberts Center for Inflammatory Bowel Disease at Weill Cornell Medicine.  He is a gastroenterologist and a mucosal immunologist focused on the care of patients with IBD.  He has expertise in evaluating and treating patients with extra-intestinal manifestations of IBD with a particular focus on joint inflammation or spondyloarthritis associated with IBD.  His research focuses on defining the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying host-microbiota interactions that drive the pathogenesis of both mucosal and systemic inflammation in IBD.  In addition, he leads a clinical trial studying the role for fecal microbiota therapy in the treatment of ulcerative colitis.  Dr. Longman’s work has been published in leading scientific journals and he has received awards from the NIH, Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, NY Crohn’s Foundation, Kenneth Rainin Foundation, Charina Foundation, and Irma T. Hirschl Trust for this work.

Dr. Scherl is the founding director of the Jill Roberts Center for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (JRC), which she established at Weill Cornell Medicine/NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital in 2006. Under her direction, JRC has experienced exciting growth. Dr. Scherl, who is the Jill Roberts Professor in Clinical Medicine at Weill Cornell, is an internationally renowned expert in treating patients with ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. She has been published extensively, and is a principal investigator on multiple clinical trials. As she searches for an IBD cure, Dr. Scherl’s commitment to patient care is the driving force of JRC.

Dr. Jacob joined JRC in July 2008. She is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine and the Director of Interdisciplinary Education. She has given numerous presentations on women’s IBD issues, particularly concerning IBD-related fertility issues and the safety of IBD medications during pregnancy. Dr. Jacob is a an investigator on multiple clinical trials and an author of numerous published papers concerning IBD.

Dr. Abramowitz joined JRC in July 2015 as an Assistant Professor of Medicine. She is the primary co-investigator on several projects characterizing IBD in the Afro-Caribbean population, and has presented her work at several national meetings.

Dr. Dana Lukin is an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine (Pending) and the Clinical Director of Translational Research for the Jill Roberts Center. He has a focus on the clinical management of complex and treatment-refractory inflammatory bowel disease and is actively involved in the clinical trials program at the center.  His research interests include real world experience with new and emerging IBD therapies, biomarker development and validation, and clinical research in IBD. Dr. Lukin serves as the director of the advanced fellowship program in IBD. He is the co-chair of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation New York Chapter Medical Advisory Committee and is actively involved in IBD patient and medical educational initiatives.

Dr. Niec is a physician scientist at the Jill Roberts Center for Inflammatory Bowel Disease at Weill Cornell Medicine where her clinical practice is focused on the care of patients with IBD. She specializes in the care of patients with complex and treatment-refractory Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. 

Her research focuses on defining the cellular communication networks within the intestinal epithelium that underly inflammatory bowel disease to improve mechanistic understanding of disease and uncover new therapeutic strategies. She has expertise in mucosal immunology and epithelial and stem cell biology. 

Dr. Niec's work has been highly cited and published in the foremost scientific journals. She has received awards for her work from the National Institutes of Health, Starr foundation,  The International Society for Stem Cell Research, and the Burroughs Wellcome Fund. The Jill Roberts Center for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (JRC) recognizes that nutrition plays an important role in maintaining a healthy gastrointestinal tract.

We are proud to work with Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Ryan Warren, M.S., R.D.N, C.D.N. Ryan specializes in providing evidence- and practice-based nutrition education and counseling for patients with a variety of complex gastrointestinal conditions, including Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), diverticulosis, diverticulitis, constipation, diarrhea, and gastroesophageal reflux (GERD). Aside from her work in clinical care, she is also actively involved in nutrition-focused clinical research at Weill Cornell and serves as a preceptor and mentor for graduate-level nutrition students in training.

Ryan holds a Master of Science degree in Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics from New York University, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Human Biology from Brown University, where she graduated magna cum laude. She is a graduate of the NYU Dietetic Internship and completed her clinical training at NYU Langone. Ryan is also an active member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Additionally, she routinely provides educational talks at local IBD support groups in Manhattan and contributes frequently to various health- and nutrition-focused publications, websites and newsletters.

Dr. Charilaou is the Advanced IBD Fellow at the Jill Roberts Center for Inflammatory Bowel Disease at Weill Cornell Medicine. He received his MD at the First Faculty of Medicine of Charles University in Prague, Czechia. He then spent two years as a post-doctoral clinical researcher at Yale University and completed his post-graduate training with a residency in Internal Medicine and a Gastroenterology & Hepatology Fellowship at Rutgers/Saint Peter’s University Hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey, under the mentorship of Dr C.S. Pitchumoni. He received his Postgraduate Diploma with Distinction from Emeritus/Columbia Executive Education in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence.His main aim is to provide innovative, comprehensive and compassionate care to his IBD patients. Dr. Charilaou’s research interest is in precision medicine in IBD and developing clinical prediction tools, that are based on big-data and artificial intelligence/machine-learning methodologies.
